Augusta-Sparta 6th District CME

The primary goal of the Augusta-Sparta District is to evangelize through Christian Education, service and mission

The Augusta-Sparta District (A-SD) is one of nine districts in the Sixth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Church (CME) which is headquartered in Georgia. A-SD is one of three districts of the Georgia North Region and is comprised of 26 churches in the Georgia counties of Richmond, Burke, Columbia, Hancock, Taliaferro, McDuffie, Warren, and Lincoln. The establishment of some district churches (Trinity-Augusta and Saint Paul-Sparta) reportedly predate the founding of the CME Denomination, December 16, 1870. For example, St. Paul CME was allegedly organized as early as 1857 when slaves and ex-slaves worshiped under what were called Brush Arbors around the Dixon Plantation in rural areas of Georgia. Additionally, Trinity CME was organized during this time after seceding from St. John Methodist Church in Augusta, Georgia. The tireless efforts of Bishop Lucius H. Holsey contributed to the formation of many Georgia churches and the establishment of Paine College in Augusta Georgia.

A-SD accounts for approximately 2500 active members in churches located in Urban and rural areas with 77% of the churches in rural parts of the state of Georgia. However, all the churches demonstrate a zeal for God and God’s work by participating in worship, civic, social activities, and ministries. In a spirit of commitment, Laity and Clergy collaborate to minister and serve members and the community in various ways such as:

  • Get out the Vote (GOTV) drives, focusing on voter registration,
  • Assistance in obtaining affordable Health Insurance through the Affordable Health Care Act
  • Providing food and clothing to the needy in different communities.
  • Assistance in health monitoring through education and screenings.
  • Assisting those formerly incarcerated in transitioning to communities.
  • Developing youth leaders through training and education.
  • Job training assistance.
